Historic Rock Castle

The Rock Castle State Historic Site is located at 139 Rockcastle Ln, Hendersonville, TN 37075. The site is the home of Daniel Smith, the man who built this fortified mansion. Construction began in 1784, but was delayed due to conflicts with Native American tribes in the area. It was finally completed in 1796.

The castle is located approximately 25 minutes from downtown Nashville. It is spread over 18 acres and overlooks Old Hickory Lake. It is the oldest structure in Middle Tennessee. The Friends of Rock Castle were formed in 1971 to preserve the historic site and its grounds. The original home of General Daniel Smith in the 18th century, this site has been preserved and is a treasure of Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and the Tennessee Historical Commission have both helped preserve the Castle. The site is open to the public, and admission is free.

The Rock Castle was built by Daniel Smith, a man who served in the Revolutionary War and later settled on a tract of land beside Drakes Creek. This land was previously inhabited by Native Americans before European settlers came here. After slavery ended, sharecroppers and enslaved people worked the fields here.

The Rock Castle was built between 1784 and 1796. General Daniel Smith and his wife Sarah Michie Smith lived in the castle for nearly two centuries. His family had connections to Andrew Jackson. Their son Andrew Jackson served as the President’s personal secretary. General Daniel Smith Donelson also served in the Civil War.

The Tennessee Historical Commission provides partial annual operating grants to the Rock Castle. It also is responsible for major maintenance of the historic site. All the artifacts are owned by the Friends of Rock Castle, Inc., a nonprofit group formed after the mansion was purchased from the Smith family. Its founding board was headed by Sarah Crosby Berry, the daughter of General Smith.
