The Rock Castle State Historic Site is located at 139 Rockcastle Ln, Hendersonville, TN 37075. The site is the home of Daniel Smith, the man who built this fortified mansion. Construction began in 1784, but was delayed due to conflicts with Native American tribes in the area. It was finally completed in 1796.
The castle is located approximately 25 minutes from downtown Nashville. It is spread over 18 acres and overlooks Old Hickory Lake. It is the oldest structure in Middle Tennessee. All the artifacts are owned by the Friends of Rock Castle, Inc., a nonprofit group formed after the mansion was purchased from the Smith family. Its founding board was headed by Sarah Crosby Berry, the daughter of General Smith.
